Nicena Fontaine, MA, LPC

Hi! My name is Nicena, and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I help teens and adults navigate change and cope with all of the messy ways that change impacts our thoughts, emotions, relationships, sense of self, and beliefs about the world. I work well with people struggling with stress, anxiety, trauma backgrounds, low self-esteem, depression, and issues specific to women. My specialties are individual and group therapy.

How I help

I create a warm, accepting, inclusive, and non-judgmental counseling environment so that you can have a safe space to talk about the challenges you’re facing. You know yourself better than anyone else ever could. I bring an understanding of mental health to support you in your goals. I tailor my approach to fit your needs, goals, and strengths so that you can find solutions that work for you.

Sometimes we get stuck in the fog of a problem or run into a problem we never learned how to cope with. An outside perspective or some new skills can be helpful in these situations. Using a strengths-based and solution-focused approach, I help you identify strengths and key solutions that can help in new or different ways. When it comes to skills for managing emotions, mindfulness, and relationships, I often use Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to develop these core skills.

I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) because it helps explain how our thoughts affect our emotions. CBT describes common ways that thinking can make us feel miserable and provides tools for changing our thinking and emotions. I work with you to explore problematic thinking patterns and shift to healthier ways of thinking. This helps slow down automatic thoughts that can cause feelings of anxiety and depression and create problems in relationships.

My background

I earned my master’s degree in Clinical Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado. I have over 8 years of experience working with clients who have struggled with stress, anxiety, mood changes, trauma, depression, self-esteem and relationship issues.

More about me

I love the arts. They give me a window into other cultures and backgrounds in a way that words can’t always express. I enjoy laughing and sometimes use my sense of humor to find the silliness in a bad day. I’m also a great fan of being outside. I believe in the healing and rejuvenating powers of the outdoors and green spaces.
