Sean Sutherland, MA, LPCC
Hi, I am Sean Sutherland, a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate with Reflective Wellness: Mind and Body. I work with adults and teenagers on anxiety, depression, anger, trauma, self-esteem, stress, and the ordinary hard seasons that come with being a person.
A lot of the people I see arrive feeling like something is wrong with them. They are reacting in ways they do not recognize, snapping at the people they love most, or carrying a level of pressure they cannot seem to put down. Most of them have been trying to manage it alone for a long time before they call.
Before I became a therapist, I spent sixteen years leading teams and growing people in the tech industry, working with individuals across many countries and cultures. That work taught me that most problems between people, and most problems inside them, come down to a handful of very human things. It also gave me a practical streak that shows up in how I do therapy.
Info on Modalities
I work primarily from a solution-focused and humanistic foundation, drawing on cognitive behavioral tools to keep the work concrete. In practice that means we spend less time excavating and more time finding the pattern, building something you can use, and checking honestly whether it worked.
I pay attention to the idea that underneath all the reacting, defending, and managing, there is a steadier version of you that already knows what it values. Much of my work is helping people learn what that version feels like so they can find their way back to it more often.
With teenagers, I work with students who are carrying more pressure than they know what to do with: school, performance, comparison, and the sense that everyone else has it figured out. I do not try to install a whole system. We start with one small thing that is actually doable and build from there.
Areas of focus include anxiety, depression, anger and emotional regulation, trauma, grief, self-esteem, academic and workplace stress, parenting strain, and life transitions.
How I help
We usually start with the part that goes unsaid: what you are feeling is a normal human response, and it does not make you broken or strange. For a lot of people, hearing that said plainly is the first thing that actually moves.
Then we get practical. I will offer you things to try between sessions, and we will look together at what worked and what did not. If you have tried therapy before and found it too vague to use, it may have been the wrong tool rather than the wrong idea. My style is warm but direct, and I will not waste your time.
Your circumstances may not change quickly. What changes is that you stop fighting your own reactions, you get clearer on what matters to you, and you leave with skills you are still using a year from now. You will also know that someone is in your corner, because I do care about the people I sit with, and that shows up in every session.
More about me
Outside of work I am a woodworker and a reef tank keeper, and most of my free time goes to my family. I am happiest when I am building something, whether that is a piece of furniture, a coral colony that has no business surviving in Colorado, or a plan with someone who has not had one in a while. Like my clients, I am still working on myself too.
